How to read a manga?
Have you just bought your first manga and are wondering how to read it? If the answer seems simple and clear to some, for newbies it is quite a problem. Don’t panic, we’ll quickly explain to you in this article how to read a manga!
Reading from right to left
Unlike a classic book as we know it in France, mangas are read not from left to right, but from right to left. Thus, you will have to open the book backwards, that is to say from the last page (4th cover), then the penultimate and so on until the first cover which thus closes the manga.
This is the Japanese reading method. Concerning the pages themselves, here too we will read from right to left and from top to bottom. Finally, as for the text, if it is written in French it will be from left to right, in the classic way. If it is written in Japanese, it will be written from right to left like the illustrations.
It can be noted that certain mangas do not necessarily respect the culture of the mangaka, and are therefore normally read from left to right. These are some rare exceptions, more generally associated with French authors for example.
